HOSPICE CARE ENRICHES QUALITY OF LIFE
Hospice care is a special kind of care that is centered around the final months of life and helps to improve the quality of life of an individual. Hospice care is a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, as well as emotional and spiritual support that is tailored to the patient’s needs and wishes. The emphasis is on caring for, not on curing an individual, wherever they may call home.
Hospice involves an interdisciplinary group that includes physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, and trained volunteers. Some of the services and types of care that hospice offers include:
- Managing the patient’s pain and symptoms
- Assisting the patient with the emotional and psychosocial, as well as spiritual aspects of dying
- Providing needed prescriptions, medical supplies, and equipment
- Coaching the family on how to care for the patient
- Making short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms become too difficult to manage at home, or the caregiver needs respite time
- Providing bereavement care and counseling to surviving family and friends
Hospice is designed to help create a supportive environment for both patients and their families. It helps patients and their families to make the best choices for their care while increasing the quality of life for the patient. Hospice gives families more quality time together.
Hospice care places a high value on dignity, respect and the wishes of the person who is ill, as well as the needs of their loved ones.
